Sweden Approves Major Frigate Deal

(MENAFN) Sweden has decided to acquire four modern frigates from French defense manufacturer Naval Group as part of one of the nation’s most significant military procurements in recent decades. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson revealed the decision on Tuesday during a press briefing.

According to a Swedish broadcaster, Kristersson stated that the vessels are the ships that "best meet the Swedish requirements.” The newly selected FDI-class frigates are expected to greatly enhance Sweden’s naval strength and air defense systems, including capabilities designed to counter fighter aircraft and ballistic missile threats.

Kristersson described the agreement as "one of the biggest defense investments" since the introduction of the Gripen fighter jet program in the 1980s. He emphasized that the acquisition would boost Sweden’s anti-aircraft capacity to nearly three times its current level.

“With this decision, I am convinced that Sweden is now contributing to making the Baltic Sea significantly safer in the future,” he said.

Commander-in-Chief Michael Claesson noted that the advanced warships would enable Sweden to take part more efficiently in upcoming NATO missions beyond the Baltic Sea area.

Defense Minister Pal Jonson explained that swift delivery timelines played an important role in selecting France for the contract, highlighting that Naval Group already possesses a completed ship design ready for production.

Talks between Swedish and French officials are anticipated to commence shortly. The broadcaster reported that deliveries are expected to begin in 2030, with one frigate scheduled to be handed over each year.
