Russia, Ukraine Reach Three-Day Ceasefire, Prisoner Swap Deal
(MENAFN) Russia and Ukraine reached a landmark agreement Friday, consenting to a three-day ceasefire and a reciprocal exchange of 1,000 prisoners of war — a significant, if fragile, de-escalation brokered with the backing of U.S. President Donald Trump.
"At the instruction of Russian President Vladimir Putin, I confirm that U.S. President Donald Trump's initiative regarding the ceasefire and an exchange of prisoners of war between Russia and Ukraine is acceptable to the Russian side," Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov told reporters.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky swiftly confirmed the arrangement on X, stating: "We received Russia's agreement to conduct a prisoner exchange in the format of 1,000 for 1,000. A ceasefire regime must also be established on May 9, 10, and 11." He added that he had instructed the Ukrainian team to promptly prepare everything necessary for the exchange.
In a parallel diplomatic gesture, Zelensky signed a decree excluding Red Square in Moscow from Ukraine's "plan for the use of Ukrainian weapons" during Russia's Victory Day parade on May 9, citing humanitarian considerations, according to a document published on the presidential website.
Trump had earlier signaled the breakthrough on Truth Social, writing that the truce "will include a suspension of all kinetic activity, and also a prison swap of 1,000 prisoners from each country."
The agreement follows a statement issued Thursday by the Russian Ministry of Defense, in which it announced that all Russian military groupings operating in the conflict zone would fully suspend combat operations during the Victory Day commemorations, from midnight on May 8 through May 10.
