EU schedules meeting to address Trump’s Greenland tariff threats
Antonio Costa, the Council’s president, posted that the meeting aims to coordinate EU action in response to the recent developments. He stressed that member states, after consultations, “reconfirm our strong commitment” to unity, international law, territorial integrity, national sovereignty, and solidarity with Denmark and Greenland, while protecting shared transatlantic interests in Arctic peace and security, particularly through NATO.
Costa also noted that EU members maintain the view that the tariffs “would undermine transatlantic relations and are incompatible with the EU-US trade agreement.” He emphasized the union’s preparedness to resist coercive measures while continuing to engage constructively with the United States on areas of mutual interest.
The announcement follows Trump’s statement on Saturday that the US would impose 10% tariffs on imports from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, and Finland starting Feb. 1, increasing to 25% in June, unless Greenland is sold in what he called a “complete and total purchase.”
European leaders swiftly rejected the move, reiterating support for Denmark. On Sunday, the eight affected countries issued a joint statement denouncing the tariff threat and reaffirming their commitment to Arctic security and national sovereignty.
