Chile Declares State of Catastrophe Amid Wildfires
"We have a confirmed number today of 18 deceased persons, but we have the certainty, unfortunately, that this number will increase," Boric informed journalists.
By 6 pm (2100GMT) Sunday, 33 blazes were still consuming large areas in the Biobio and Nuble provinces, while the National Forestry Corporation (CONAF) alongside emergency brigades continued battling the infernos.
Authorities confirmed that fires remain uncontrolled in Laja, Ranquil, Florida, Santa Juana, Quillon, and Nacimiento.
Boric stated that a state of catastrophe was declared at 2.30 am in the two affected provinces "due to the severity" of the fires, aiming to improve containment, logistics, and public safety.
The nation also enforced curfews in Lirquen beginning at 7 pm until further notice, and in Penco, Nacimiento, and Laja from 8 pm until 6 am Monday.
Official figures show 300 houses destroyed in Biobio, though Boric predicted the ultimate tally will surpass 1,000 across both provinces.
He urged residents to promptly follow emergency warnings, stressing the rapid expansion of the Penco-Lirquen blaze.
US Ambassador to Chile Brandon Judd posted on social media platform X that President Donald Trump had authorized him to provide Chile with aid to confront the wildfires.
