Russia warns of response if US restarts nuclear tests
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the statement after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the country’s renewed testing directive “includes delivery systems,” referring to President Donald Trump’s Oct. 29 order for the Pentagon to restart nuclear tests “immediately.”
Although Rubio did not directly confirm that full-scale testing was planned, Peskov said, “If we consider this as confirmation that the US is withdrawing from the test ban, then this confirms these intentions,” emphasizing that such a move would break the long-standing moratorium on nuclear testing. “As our president said, in this case, Russia will act accordingly,” he added.
Peskov clarified that President Vladimir Putin’s Nov. 5 directive was not an instruction to begin preparations for nuclear tests but rather to collect data and “examine the advisability” of any such preparations in response to US actions.
In a separate interview, Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoygu said Russian agencies and experts have already begun “modeling possible responses to both existing challenges and their potential evolution,” stressing that Moscow “cannot sit idly by” as global arms control frameworks weaken.
Shoygu criticized Washington for failing to offer “a comprehensive explanation” regarding its nuclear testing stance, saying Russia still expects the US to honor its obligations under international test-ban agreements.
“Russia is prepared for any development, but will under no circumstances allow a new arms race to be provoked, no matter how much our opponents might want that,” he said.
He also accused European nations of issuing “bellicose statements and plans,” noting that Russia continues to monitor EU and NATO decisions closely and will adjust its military planning as needed.
