Iraq Records 56.11 Percent Voter Turnout in Parliamentary Elections
In its announcement, the Commission reported that 12,009,453 citizens took part in selecting representatives for the 329-seat legislature.
The statement detailed that 10,904,637 Iraqis voted on Tuesday, marking a 54.35% participation rate.
Additionally, 1,084,289 members of the military and security forces and 20,527 displaced individuals cast their votes during Sunday’s special polling, with turnout rates of 82.52% and 77.35%, respectively.
According to the Commission, preliminary outcomes of the election are expected to be made public on Wednesday evening.
A total of 7,743 candidates, among them 2,247 women, competed in this electoral race.
The current parliamentary session, which commenced on January 9, 2022, spans four years.
Iraqi legislation mandates that parliamentary elections must be conducted no less than 45 days before the conclusion of the sitting term.
At present, Shia political parties and alliances hold the majority in parliament. Iraq’s power-sharing system traditionally allocates key leadership roles among its principal communities: the presidency to the Kurds, the prime ministership to the Shias, and the parliamentary speakership to the Sunnis.
