Bangladesh Air Force plane crashes into school killing nineteen
The accident occurred around 1:06pm local time, shortly after the F-7 BGI training jet took off, the Inter Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR) of the Bangladesh armed forces confirmed. The F-7 is a multirole fighter aircraft produced by China’s Chengdu Aircraft Corporation, based on the Soviet-designed MiG-21, and is primarily used in Bangladesh to train fighter pilots.
The aircraft reportedly burst into flames on impact, sending a large plume of smoke into the sky, BDnews24 reported, citing ISPR sources. Eight firefighting units were dispatched to the scene to extinguish the blaze.
Shah Bulbul, a spokesperson for Milestone School and College, told BDnews24 that the crash happened near the school’s entrance while classes were in session. Students were inside the building at the time. He added that the injured were being evacuated individually from the area.
Rescue teams have recovered 19 bodies from the wreckage, and over 50 people have been hospitalized due to their injuries, according to reports.
Bangladesh’s interim leader, Muhammad Yunus, expressed his “deep sorrow and grief over the tragic accident” in a statement posted on X.
The ISPR has not released the identities of the victims or any details about the pilot, according to local media.
