US Court Sentences Former Louisville Officer

(MENAFN) Brett Hankison, a former police officer from Louisville, was handed a prison sentence of 33 months on Monday for infringing upon the civil rights of Breonna Taylor.

Taylor was a 26-year-old Black woman who was fatally shot during a flawed police raid, an event that ignited widespread protests across the nation against racial injustice.

Taylor, who worked in health care, lost her life on March 13, 2020, when she was shot while asleep in her Kentucky apartment.

The tragic incident took place during a “no-knock police raid.”

During the raid, Taylor’s boyfriend, mistaking the officers for intruders, discharged a legally owned firearm at them.

This caused the officers to respond by firing back.

Hankison was convicted the previous year for shooting blindly into Taylor’s residence, putting her and others at risk.

Even though none of his bullets hit anyone, he was found guilty of employing excessive force that breached Taylor’s constitutional rights.
