Monsoon Rains Devastate Northern India
(MENAFN) The number of fatalities resulting from relentless monsoon downpours in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh has climbed to 125, with many more wounded or unaccounted for, authorities confirmed on Monday.
The intense rain continues to sweep across various parts of the country, compounding the crisis.
As per a declaration issued by the Emergency Operations Center in the state, at least 125 individuals have lost their lives in rain-linked events since June.
This figure includes 55 who perished in road mishaps. Additionally, 215 people have sustained injuries, while 34 remain untraced.
New spells of rainfall struck the Himalayan state again on Monday, leading to road closures and significantly obstructing ongoing relief efforts, officials noted.
The severe monsoon has inflicted destruction beyond Himachal Pradesh. In Uttar Pradesh, 18 people have died in weather-related incidents.
Meanwhile, areas in Rajasthan are experiencing conditions similar to flooding.
The northeastern parts of India have also seen major disruptions to everyday life due to heavy rains, as reported by local media.
India’s monsoon period generally starts in June and extends until September.
While the seasonal rains are vital for agricultural productivity, they frequently result in catastrophic flooding and landslides.
