China Describes Relations with EU

(MENAFN) China emphasized on Monday that its relationship with the European Union has reached a “crucial juncture,” just days before an important summit is set to take place in Beijing.

The announcement comes as global attention turns to the upcoming diplomatic meeting between Chinese and European leaders.

Speaking during a press briefing in the capital, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun remarked, “China and the EU are holding the summit at this time which is of great significance and receives international attention.”

Guo highlighted the importance of the event, emphasizing its strategic relevance on the global stage.

President Xi Jinping is scheduled to engage in discussions with EU Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who will be in Beijing to participate in the 25th China-EU summit this Thursday.

Premier Li Qiang is expected to serve as co-chair of the gathering.

Guo noted that the year 2025 will mark half a century since China and the EU first formalized diplomatic connections.

Over the decades, their partnership has become “more mature and stable,” evolving into what he described as one of the most consequential bilateral alliances worldwide.

The spokesperson stressed that collaboration between Europe and China has played a vital role in promoting global stability and progress.

He added that it “greatly contributes to world peace and development, and sets an example of mutually beneficial cooperation in the era of economic globalization.”

Trade and investment figures were also cited by Guo to illustrate the depth of the relationship.

According to him, bilateral commerce surged from $2.4 billion to $785.8 billion, with nearly $260 billion invested across both markets.

He also referenced joint efforts in addressing climate change and other cooperative domains.

Nevertheless, Guo acknowledged that the relationship is not without obstacles.

He pointed out that the EU has “exaggerated economic and trade issues and groundlessly accused China on the Ukraine issue,” actions he claimed have introduced unnecessary tensions into the bilateral dynamic.
