Mexico’s President Optimistic About U.S. Deal Ahead of Looming Tariffs
Over the weekend, the Trump administration dispatched letters to global leaders announcing new tariffs on exports. For Mexico, this notification included a proposed 30% tariff, reportedly linked to the US perception of Mexico’s insufficient efforts to combat drug trafficking along their shared border.
“We have a working group, and we hope to reach an agreement — that is our goal. There are also issues related to fentanyl and security on the table, and in that case, an agreement has already made some progress, always within the framework of respect for our sovereignty,” Sheinbaum stated.
Despite escalating tensions, the Mexican president remains hopeful that a resolution will be reached before August 1, the date when the tariffs would take effect.
During the weekend, President Trump criticized Mexico for failing to effectively secure the border and disrupt drug trafficking into the US, framing the 30% tariff as a response to the perceived shortcomings of Sheinbaum’s administration.
Addressing Trump’s remarks on her anti-cartel approach, Sheinbaum stressed that the United States must also bear responsibility and collaborate with Mexico to stop fentanyl trafficking, especially since the US is the largest consumer of the drug worldwide.
“We’re doing our part, and they also have to do theirs. We’ve consistently emphasized the need to control the flow of weapons from the United States into Mexico, and the arrest of individuals involved in drug trafficking within the US—that is the responsibility of the United States,” Sheinbaum added.
